Synopsis:
“Sightseeing Sculpture: The Sky, The Land, and The Sea” - a spectacle horizon formed by 163 micro-parallel-universes, one could ride on this pixelated macro spectrum, glide above the cloudy sky, wander on the trembling land, dive and submerge under the silent sea.
“The Sky, The Land, & The Sea”, the first ever Shoebox Sculpture Biennale in Singapore, invites more than 80 local sculptors to explore the application of traditional sculpture and to imagine contemporary craftsmanship alongside the changing landscape of contemporary art practices in Singapore.
Comprising two key components, foremost is “The Sky, The Land, and The Sea” the Shoebox Sculpture Biennale 2023 (Open Call). A site-specific installation prompted by the theme of sightseeing and context of the actual site is an interpretation by artist, to reposition sightseers, providing a shift in navigational point of view. Next is “Sightseeing Sculpture”, a series of guided tour programmes to navigate audiences through varying curatorial lenses and contemporary narrations. It offers multiple alternative visions on various horizons of the sculpture landscape in Singapore. Under the same theme, the series of engagement programmes were fashioned as guided sightseeing tours.
Co-organized by Sculpture 2052 and Sculpture Society (Singapore), in-collaboration with Artists Caravan and a group of young sculptors of our time, “Sightseeing Sculpture: The Sky, The Land, and The Sea” is one of the latest research endeavor expanding upon the 2021, Re-THINGing Sculpture Project by Sculpture Society (Singapore) to showcase the works of local sculptors.

Sightseeing Sculpture Guided Tours invites you, the sightseers, to experience sculpture like you have never before. Artist-docents enact the role of a Tour Guides, and more than 100 miniature sculptures as key landmarks - directing sightseers on a journey through the nuances behind the making, the techniques used to realise these sculptures, and also the history of key public sculptures in Singapore. Covering a wide variety of the sculptural practices of artists based in Singapore, the tour hopes to provide insight into the varied and disparate field of sculpture in Singapore.
These tours are part tea time snack service (from licensed kitchen); part performance; and part guided tour of the artworks at the Shoebox Sculpture Biennale 2023.

What makes one city different from the other? According to Edward T. McMahon in The Distinctive City, “A sense of place is a unique collection of qualities and characteristics – visual, cultural, social, and environmental – that provide meaning to a location. Sense of place is what makes one city or town different from another, but sense of place is also what makes our physical surroundings worth caring about.” As such, besides strategic urban planning, site-specific public art are punctuations that bestow diverse points of access into the site’s history and vision. This guided sculpture tour offers a narrative of the site, information about the sculpture and its site-specificity in an interactive and engaging stroll.
These guided sculpture tours will stroll through two CBD areas in the city. Participants will get to experience the site-specific sculptures and the environmental context that embraces it. After the tour, participants will gain a wider appreciation of public sculptures in Singapore’s urban landscape. Participants will also be gifted a trail map , a cartographic design with limited edition of 30 per trail, by two local artists, @Superduperd4n for Morning Trail and Long Yinghan for Afternoon Trail, as a token to revisit and share stories of these trails with their near and dear.

The Sand That Was Once A Mountain:
One day, the mountain thought to itself, "I wish I could see the world." Shortly, a piece of its formation broken off and begins to tumble and rumble down the face of the mountain body. And finally, the formation reached the foot of the mountain. It was now smaller, and had a few of itselves. Some decided to stay close to the mountain, some decided it wanted to see more. So off they went, tumbling and rumbling to different parts of the world.
Many years passed since, now as a grain of sand, cradle in 1 man's palm, it told the tale of the world it has seen.
A mobile, sculptural, bigger than life-size periscope installation.
It could be pushed around and approach various sections of ‘The Sky, The Land,
and The Sea’ during the show period.
